It is a requirement that all Graduate Workers at University of Pennsylvania choose to either sign up as a Union member and pay dues, or decline membership and pay fair share fees. This form allows you to make that choice and fulfill this obligation.

Every Graduate Worker who becomes a member of Graduate Workers Together at the University of Pennsylvania-UAW (GETUP-UAW) Local 5124 helps strengthen our advocacy for better working conditions. Currently, both membership dues and fair share fees are 1.44% of gross pay with a $10 initiation or reinstatement fee.

Membership in GETUP-UAW Local 5124 is how Graduate Workers build power to enforce our rights!

If you choose to decline membership, you are still required to pay fair share fees and you waive your right to attend Union meetings, run for and hold Union office, vote to elect Union officers, and otherwise participate in the governance of our Union.

Membership in Graduate Workers Together at the University of Pennsylvania-UAW (GETUP-UAW) makes our Graduate Worker voice stronger and more democratic. Consistent majority support and participation enabled us to negotiate new rights and improvements in our first contract and will enable us to enforce these rights and seek further improvements moving forward. Union members have the right to attend Union meetings, run for and hold Union office, vote to elect Union officers, and otherwise participate in the governance of our Union. Membership dues are currently 1.44% of gross pay with a $10 initiation or reinstatement fee.

Authorization for Deduction of Dues by the University of Pennsylvania

I hereby authorize and direct my employer, the University of Pennsylvania, to deduct from my earnings—and to transmit to GETUP-UAW—dues, including an initiation or reinstatement fee and bi-weekly dues in the amount established in accordance with the UAW Constitution and Local Union Bylaws, and in such manner as may be agreed upon between The University of Pennsylvania and GETUP-UAW at any time while this authorization is in effect. GETUP-UAW may notify the University of Pennsylvania of this authorization. This authorization is voluntary on my part and shall remain in effect while I am employed by the University of Pennsylvania for current and future appointments in the GETUP-UAW bargaining unit, unless and until I revoke it by notifying GETUP-UAW of my decision to revoke it. This authorization is made pursuant to the provisions of Section 302(c) of the Labor Management Relations Act of 1947 and otherwise. Contributions or gifts to the UAW are not deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes. Voluntary Contributions to the UAW Voluntary Community Action Program (V-CAP)

Political action has played a key role in establishing Graduate Workers Together at the University of Pennsylvania-UAW (GETUP-UAW) and winning improvements in our working conditions at Penn. Through voluntary contributions to the UAW Voluntary Community Action Program (V-CAP), we help elect pro-worker and pro-education candidates who can influence state and federal decisions on key issues, like workers rights, immigration laws, research funding, etc., which impact our daily lives at Penn. If you are eligible to vote in U.S. elections, please contribute!
Yes! I am eligible to vote in U.S. elections and will contribute to V-CAP. Subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, I hereby authorize The University of Pennsylvania to withhold monthly from my earnings UAW Voluntary Community Action Program (V-CAP) deductions in the following amount and to remit such contributions to UAW V-CAP in the manner agreed upon between The University of Pennsylvania and GETUP-UAW at any time while this authorization is in effect.No, I choose not to make an additional voluntary contribution.

This authorization is voluntarily made. I understand that the signing of this authorization and the making of payments to UAW V-CAP are not conditions of membership in GETUP-UAW or of employment with The University of Pennsylvania, that I have the right to refuse to sign this authorization and contribute to UAW V-CAP without any reprisal, that UAW V-CAP will use the money it receives to make political contributions and expenditures in connection with federal, state and local elections, that all UAW members may be eligible for V-CAP raffle drawings, regardless of whether they make a contribution to UAW V-CAP, and that monies contributed to UAW V-CAP constitute a voluntary contribution to a joint fundraising effort by the UAW and the AFL-CIO. This authorization shall remain in full force and effect until revoked in writing by me.
