The Student Loan Assistance Fund (“SLAF”) is a benefit provided by the UAW Region 9A Education Fund to assist eligible members with their educational loans. Applicants must be UAW members in good standing at the time of application and pay-out, for whom an employer contributes to the UAW Region 9A Education Fund’s Student Loan Assistance Fund, and with at least one year of continuous membership (regardless of employer), in order to be eligible. Part-time members will be eligible for a pro-rated amount of their total eligible reimbursement request, based on their total hours. Currently, members at the following units are eligible:
- Legal Aid Society (Attorneys' Unit)
- New York Legal Assistance Group
- Riseboro Community Partnership
- UAW Staff United (ALAA Staff)
The window to submit applications is open from March 1, 2026 to April 1, 2026. Eligibility and the amount of each award will be determined and communicated by May 1. All awards will be paid out by June 15th. The SLAF will be divided proportionally among eligible applicants based upon their respective share of eligible loan payments, up to the current cap of $5,250 per individual per calendar year. The loan assistance payout to applicants will be determined by taking the total value of eligible reimbursement requests (“Eligible Loan Total”) divided by the pool of available funding ("Total Loan Pool") to determine the percentage for each participant (e.g. $600,000 requested in reimbursement by all participants and potential benefit amount of $200,000, for example, results in an award to each applicant of 33% of their eligible amount for that application cycle).
Loans eligible for the assistance program include qualified educational loans as defined under 26 US Code § 221 borrowed by the employee for the employee’s own eligible education. Loans taken out on behalf of dependents are excluded from eligibility. Loan payments must have been made during the calendar year 2025. A recipient's eligble loan payment will be subtracted by any amount of loan assistance (e.g. HESC DALF, LRAP, etc.) they received during the previous calendar year.
See the full rules here.
The Total Loan Pool for 2026 is: $324,453.79
